Seed spheres at Little Day Out

Our Healthy Kids Advisors community stall at this year's Little Day Out was a hit!

The family day was part of the fun-filled Greater Dandenong Children's Festival, and our bustling stall offered loads of free family activities to engage with the local community. The festival was well-attended with roving theatre characters, a silent disco, petting zoo and face painting.

Our Healthy Kids Advisor for Greater Dandenong, Belinda Nowakowski, led the stall's hands-on activities with free seed sphere sessions. Children and young people got stuck into soil, flour and basil seeds to make two seed spheres: one to plant in an area of their garden and one to donate to their school. The session included an activity sheet area where over 80 young people drew and rated their favourite school lunches and healthy, tasty snack options. Belinda will draw on these ideas to help local schools make simple, healthy swaps that their students want to see.

Even when the rain came down, families gathered to hear garden, kitchen and nature stories read from colourful picture books from the local library. 

The Little Day Out was a great experience for our Advisor to meet, laugh and exchange ideas with local families. Thanks to everyone who came down. We can't wait for next year.

About the Healthy Kids Advisor initiative

Our Healthy Kids Advisor in Greater Dandenong is connecting with schools, outside hours school care, sports clubs and community/council facilities to help boost access to healthy food and drink options. All these facilities in Greater Dandenong can receive free one-on-one support from their Healthy Kids Advisor. 

Our dedicated workforce of Healthy Kids Advisors operate in 13 communities to deliver pleasurable food education and boost participation in the Vic Kids Eat Well movement. Vic Kids Eat Well is a state-wide initiative supported by the Victorian Government and delivered by Cancer Council Victoria’s Achievement Program, in partnership with Nutrition Australia’s Healthy Eating Advisory Service.
