  • The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation has launched a market bag in collaboration with Worktones.
  • The limited-edition bag features Stephanie Alexander’s handwritten shopping list for all-season staples.

  • All proceeds from sales support the Foundation’s hands-on, inclusive food education.

To celebrate Kitchen Garden Month, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation is releasing a limited-edition market bag in collaboration with hospitality design studio Worktones with 100% of proceeds going towards our charitable mission.

For this special project, founder Stephanie Alexander AO handwrote her essential shopping list of everyday staples; items that are practical, versatile and suited to most budgets and tastes.  Her distinctive cursive script, once used to create menus at her celebrated restaurant Stephanie’s, was then screen-printed onto a large, durable Worktones cotton canvas bag. The design includes an internal pocket to keep small goods, keys and phone secure, and the sturdy canvas material washes beautifully for long-term use.

Stephanie’s shopping list

So, what’s on Stephanie’s shopping list? Unwashed potatoes, imperfect lemons, Swiss brown mushrooms, citrus, big leafy spinach, tart rhubarb, extra virgin olive oil, canned chickpeas, anchovies in olive oil, and more.

“Blueberries, as most of us know, are high in vitamin C, but this isn't why I chose them. I did because I love them! I have them with my muesli at breakfast time, and I often add a bit of rhubarb as well,” says Stephanie.

Butter also makes the list, but not just any butter. “Just to be pedantic, I usually buy lightly salted butter and I try to use it for everything, so whether I'm making pastry or sautéing my mushrooms, I'll use the same butter,” she explains.

Broccolini is one of her favourite vegetables, especially the purple variety. “I usually peel the stems, because then you have a stem as delicate as the finest asparagus. I cook the stems for about a minute longer than the top,” she says.

The result is a thoughtful, fool-proof list brimming with inspiration for your next shop.
