Celebrate Dairy for World Milk Day 2020

Wednesday, May 13, 2020

On June 1st, milk lovers around the world are celebrating dairy for World Milk Day. World Milk Day was launched in 2001 by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations to recognize the importance of milk as a global food. Each year since, the benefits of milk and dairy products have been promoted around the world.

Some milk facts:

  • Milk is the fifth largest source of energy and the third largest source of protein and fat for humans.
  • Milk and dairy products are nutrient-dense foods. They supply energy and significant amounts of protein and micronutrients essential to reducing hunger and malnutrition, particularly among the most vulnerable including pregnant women and children.
  • Milk is one of the most produced and valuable agricultural commodities worldwide, supporting the livelihoods of one billion people.

Milk provides children with more than ten essential nutrients and is especially important to help build and maintain strong bones. Milk is also a valuable source of calcium, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, iodine, iron, potassium, folates, vitamin A, vitamin D, riboflavin, vitamin B12, protein and fat. Last year 68 countries took part in World Milk Day including Australia! This year, along with our Professional Development Partner Saputo Dairy Australia, we will be celebrating everything dairy. Will you join us? You can participate by enjoying a delicious glass of milk or a bowl of yogurt, or by making one of our yummy dairy-filled recipes.

Potato, Leek & Spinach Torte
Labne (Middle Eastern yoghurt cheese)
Banana & Berry Smoothie

You might like to discuss and learn about the hard-working dairy workers and milk farmers; or the cows who make the milk for us to enjoy. Program and member schools can dig into our recent Farms & Market Gardens KGP at home collection which is full to the brim with ideas and resources associated with Dairy, including a Q&A video with Saputo Dairy Australia suppliers Jody and Susanna Haberle.

This year’s campaign starts on 29 May with the “Enjoy Dairy Rally” where you can share content around the themes of nutrition, community and enjoyment on social media, culminating on World Milk Day, June 1. Please share your dairy photos and stories on social media and be sure to use and follow the hashtags #WorldMilkDay and #EnjoyDairy to see all the dairy love from around the world!
