Expressions of interest are now open for primary schools in the Blacktown Local Government Area, to join the Blacktown Kitchen Garden Project. Closing date is Friday 30 August.

Over the next five years, 16 primary schools on Dharug Country will receive grants and support to join the globally recognised Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. Schools can apply to be the demonstration school or one of the further 15 schools to receive an infrastructure grant. Kitchen Garden Program membership supports and inspires educators to run hands-on kitchen and garden sessions with students. membership includes face-to-face and online professional development, printed resources, and access to 1000+ curriculum-linked lesson plans, recipes, and activities through our online resource library and community hub, the Shared Table. Schools that are part of the Blacktown Kitchen Garden Project will also receive face-to-face support from our locally based Project Lead, Rose Tilbury.

If you’re wondering what the Kitchen Garden Program looks like in practice, Herbersham Public School in Western Sydney are a great example. Members since 2011, their Year 3 and 4 students have participated in curriculum-aligned activities such as caring for chickens, growing vegetables in their kitchen garden, learning recipes in the kitchen and practising their skills at home preparing meals for their families. Local community knowledge and expertise will guide the design and implementation of the Blacktown Kitchen Garden Project. This initiative, delivered in collaboration with Western Sydney Local Health District Centre for Population Health, is made possible through generous philanthropic funding from TLE Electrical.
